Meet the Author – Kellyn Roth – an author interview

Today I am sharing an author interview with Kellyn Roth. This interview was previously shared on Library Lady’s Kid Lit.

Author Info:

Kellyn Roth is a historical romance & women’s fiction author who writes about the empty places where hope has the most room to grow. Her novels include the inspirational Victorian family saga, The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy, and the Kees & Colliers series, which follows a broken family in the tumultuous years of the first half of the 20th century.

Kellyn is a student of the Author Conservatory, a virtual assistant, and a writing coach. When not building her author career, she is likely getting lost somewhere in the Pacific Northwest with her friends, watching period dramas and facetious comedies, or spending time with her husband.

Author Interview

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Hmm, I’m really not sure! I wrote on and off all through my childhood, though I technically say since I was seven. I didn’t know if I really wanted to be an author then – I think I officially decided I wanted to publish when I was ten or eleven!

What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?

Definitely historical romance! And … I’m not really sure! There’s something charming about the eras and the way people talked and acted. I also have always loved history!

What historical figure do you admire and why?

Hmm … well, I have a number of ones I admire, but I’m going with Theodore Roosevelt. He was such an interesting, exciting, bold self-starter of a guy! Did you know he had asthma and other health problems as a kid, and he had to build his strength in a gymnasium?

Which character did you enjoy writing most?

In this draft? It was fun to add a little more personality to Ivy, but I think the one I enjoyed most was Nettie. She’s so solid, so dependable, so strong, and yet so broken, so sensitive, so gentle, and the mix of the two always makes me smile. Also, dramatic backstories for the win!

Because I am a K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

AGH, I can’t choose one! I love so many authors – Beverly Cleary, Maud Hart Lovelace, Jeanne Birdsall, A.A. Milne, C.S. Lewis – but I suppose today I’ll recommend Mandy by Julie Andrews Edwards. It’s the sweetest, most heart-rending, most beautiful little story!

Every year I organize a Young Authors Day for the kids at our school. What advice would you give to a child who wants to be a writer?

I feel like most of the best writing advice is easy to learn, so I’ll just give a helpful piece of information: writing is a viable and valuable skill that can easily make a viable and valuable career. The market has changed since your grandparents’ days, and changed again since your parents’ days, and now it is a market where writers of all shapes and sizes can succeed if they have the know-how and the will-power to do so. If that’s your dream, it’s a good one!

Thank you so much Kellyn for sharing with us today. I always enjoy getting to know authors a little better.

Kellyn writes for the adult audience but some are appropriate for a K-12 Christian School library. Check out Kellyn’s Books on Amazon You can read my reviews of some of her books here. Make you scroll down and click on older to see all of the reviews I’ve done.
