Each summer I like to do activity days which focus on a specific book or group of books with a STEM or STEAM theme. Last year, my library hosted a Rosie Revere Engineering Day. I ran the activity for 2 hours for students entering kindergarten through fourth grade. Because this was one of my fundraisers, we charged $10 per student.
We started the time with reading Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty. There is a great teacher’s guide and event kit available on the author’s website. I took the copter .pdf and printed it on card stock. 
One of our activities was to make these copters and then figure out how to make them fly better. We used the Rosie Revere Engineer Notebook from the event kit to document our design changes. The littles needed help with the documentation but with a volunteer it worked. We first stood carefully on the
library tables to test them, then we took them outside and tried them out from some of our playground equipment.
Once the kiddos seemed finished with this activity, we read The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires. Using ideas found free on TeachersPayTeachers, I provided the students with boxes, cardboard tubes, tape, and scissors as well as my maker table of supplies from my maker days. They were then to plan out “My Most Magnificent Thing” and create it using available supplies.
Some of the kiddos finished early so I gave them a stack of index cards, scissors, and tape with the challenge “What can you make?”
In addition to the copters, I provided a packet for each student. The packet included the Rosie Revere Engineer Notebook, a paper copy of the copter with instructions, as well as the create and reflect worksheets from The STEM Design Challenge:My Most Magnificent Thing from TeachersPayTeachers. If you are looking for individual workbooks to supplement Rosie Revere, Engineer, the Rosie Revere’s Big Project Book for Bold Engineers might be one to use. I purchased the book with the hopes of getting ideas from it, but it really is a workbook which cannot be copied.
The kids really enjoyed this two hours. This summer I am doing an Iggy Peck Architect Day. Watch for information on it in the fall.
