AN INTERVIEW WITH MELONY TEAGUE

When did you first know you wanted to be an author? I always thought the idea of being an author was cool. It wasn’t until 2010 that I began to think that maybe I could actually become one, so I began my writing journey then. My first book was co-authored with my writers group, and it is a devotional for writers called, As the Ink Flows, Devotions to Inspire Christian Writers & SpeakersA Promise to Keep is my fiction debut.

When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

I’m a mom of two teens so there’s that hat. I’m also a freelance writer, so I work for clients. When I’m not working however, I enjoy family movie night with my family. We all love to read. For fun, my husband and I will escape for the occasional date night.  In the summer, I love to sit out on my deck and watch what’s going on over on the lake. We live on Lake Wilcox, it’s a small lake, but it’s always entertaining to see who is out there. In the winter, the ice fishermen are out. As the kids mature and leave home, we hope to get more travelling in.

What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?

I have a few genres that I love but it depends on my mood as to which one I will pick to read at any given time. I think because I am a romantic at heart, I’d have to say romance—either historical or contemporary or romantic suspense.

What is your favorite holiday? And why?

Christmas is my favorite because everyone gets vacation time and as a family, we get to spend it together celebrating Jesus’ birth. I love the twinkling lights and all the fun get-togethers we have in December leading up to the big day.

What historical figure do you admire and why?

Nelson Mandela. I admire him because of how he led South Africa, with grace and forgiveness in a potentially turbulent time. Also, his birthday was also on July 18th, so is mine, but in different years, of course.

Because I am a K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

Unblemished by Sara Ella. It’s YA, and I love her books.

Every year I organize a Young Authors Day for the kids at our school. What advice would you give to a child who wants to be a writer?

I’d say get into the habit of writing and stick to it. Form a habit and practice writing as often as you can. Enjoy the process as much as the goal.

Thanks, Melony, for taking a couple of minutes to help us get to know you better.
