Make Your Own Puppets

Periodically I share resources that you may like to add to your library. This is one I purchased to use with one of our summer fundraisers. It would also be good for a Maker Space.

Carreiro, Carolyn. Make Your Own Puppets & Puppet Theaters. Illustrated by Norma Jean Martin-Jourdenais. Nashville, TN: Williamson Books, 2005.

From the Back Cover

Puppets: What would YOU like to be today? In the world of puppets, the possibilities are limitless!

Create imaginary characters to “try on behaviors,” act out history and adventure stories, solve mysteries, be the hero or heroine, live underwater, or become a fictional character.

Make all kinds of puppets from recycled materials, paper envelopes, sticks, dowels, milk jugs, stray gloves – and even your painted hands!

Put on puppet shows, creating your own puppet theaters, scripts, sets, scenery, sound, and lighting, plus learn the secrets of puppetry and performance techniques.

Learn about life! People who use puppets tend to understand others better, a result of observing how their “puppet characters” respond to actions and words.

For people ages 8 and up – and their families and friends.

My Review

I purchased Make Your Own Puppets & Puppet Theaters for use at one of our Maker Mania days this summer. One of the stations had materials for making puppets and a puppet stage. I love the fact that some of the puppets in this book are easy to make and require materials you probably have on hand or that are easy to obtain. Other options require a little more searching to find the materials.

This resource would make a great addition to a library maker space. Families, especially those who homeschool,  may also enjoy using this resource as a fun family activity.

Make Your Own Puppets & Puppet Theaters will be added to our K-12 Christian School library for students to check out. It may also find a place in our Maker Space on occasion.
