Not Motivated to Clear the Clutter?
A cluttered library does more than just make it look messy. It can play havoc with the emotions of those who visit the library and leave you feeling like you’ll never get it all done. Finding the motivation to clean can be a challenge!
De-cluttering can take a lot of effort. You’re probably going to need a good level of motivation to get started. The question is, how can you get the motivation to de-clutter when you currently don’t have any?
I’m going to share some tips to clear clutter when you’re not motivated.

Make a de-cluttering plan
The first thing you’ll want to do is sit down and make a de-cluttering plan. This will help you discover where to start and split down it down into easily manageable tasks.
The great thing about having a plan in place, is that it can really help you to stay motivated. As you tick off each task, it motivates you to complete the next one.
If you don’t have a plan, you’ll find you often won’t get as much done and it’s much easier to give up part way through.
Start with tasks you can complete in one minute
Often, the reason we lose motivation to de-clutter is because it’s such an enormous task. When there’s a lot to do, it can quickly become off-putting.
So, start by completing tasks that take just one minute. This could be checking in the books stacked on the counter, shelving some books (set a timer for one minute and see how many you can shelve), dusting a shelf or two or emptying the trash can. You’ll be surprised how many tasks you can get done in a minute.
You could then extend this to tasks which take a few minutes. When you break it down into such small steps, it doesn’t feel like you’re actually doing much. However, you’ll soon start to see it becomes a lot cleaner throughout the course of the day.
Throw on some music
De-cluttering really doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, if you don’t have students in the library, throw on some music and you may be surprised how much you enjoy it. It makes you clean faster and you may even find yourself combining dancing with cleaning. Wouldn’t your students love to walk into the library and see you dancing while shelving or dusting?
Alternatively, some people find it useful to listen to an audiobook while they de-clutter. You could even throw on an audiobook of a book you are considering adding to the library and preview it while cleaning.
Set a de-clutter timer
A great tip to follow to keep you motivated, is to set a de-clutter timer. That is, set it for 10 or 15 minutes at a time. This gives you plenty of time to get a head start on the clutter and you can take a break once the timer goes off. Maybe the students are all gone for the day and it still isn’t time for you to leave or maybe there is an all-student assembly leaving your library empty – use that time to do some focused de-cluttering.
Do this periodically throughout the day and you’ll manage to de-clutter the home without getting stressed or overwhelmed.
Reward yourself after it’s done
There’s no doubt de-cluttering (or just getting caught up on shelving) can be hard work. Therefore, it’s a great idea to plan a reward for yourself once you’ve finished. It could be stopping for your favorite coffee on the way home, your favorite dessert, or watching your favorite movie.
These are just some of the ways you can de-clutter when you’re not feeling motivated. Starting out small and breaking the tasks down are two of the best tips you can utilize. Give them a try today and see just how easy it can be to de-clutter.
