Fifth Grade Favorites – 2019

As promised –

Each year I allow the fifth grade students to tell me what their favorite picture book in our library is. I use those titles for read-alouds the last couple library times. Here is this  years list. They are listed in order of number of students who choose the title.

SneetchesSeuss, Dr. The Sneetches. New York: Random House, 1961. Classic Dr. Seuss title.

FlotsamWeisner, David. Flotsam. New York: Clarion Books, 2006. A wordless book about a camera that is retrieved from the ocean. The main character gets the pictures developed and it is interesting what the camera has seen. The book was a Caldecott Medal winner.

LoraxSeuss, Dr. The Lorax. New York: Random House Books for Young Readers, 1971. Classic Dr. Seuss title.

BlueSeeger, Laura Vaccaro. Blue. New York: Roaring Brook Press, 2018. A mostly wordless book focusing on the color blue. It was one of the books in our Mock Caldecott for this year. You can read more about it here.

VeryHungryCaterpillarCarle, Eric. The Very Hungry Caterpillar. New York: Philomel Books, 1987. A favorite for many years. You can read more about it here. 

Good Night MoonBrown, Margaret Wise.  Goodnight Moon. New York: HarperCollins, 2007. A favorite bedtime story for many years.

journeyBecker, Aaron. Journey. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press, 2013. A wordless book and a Caldecott Honor book. You can read more about it here. 

returnBecker, Aaron. Return. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press, 2016. A wordless book. You can read more about it here.

nowPortis, Antoinette. Now. New York: Roaring Brook Press, 2017. A picture book which shows the importance of what is happening NOW. You can read more about it here.

go dog goEastman, P.D. Go Dog Go. New York: Random House/Beginner Books, 1961. Classic Beginner Books title.

Cat in HatSeuss, Dr. Cat in the Hat. New York: Random House, 1957. Classic Dr. Seuss title.

redAlexander, Jed. Red. Petaluma, CA: Cameron + Company, 2018. A mostly wordless book retelling the story of Red Riding Hood. It was one of the books in our Mock Caldecott for this year. You can read more about it here.

Drum Dream GirlEngle, Margarita. Drum Dream Girl. Illustrated by Rafael Lopez. New York: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing, 2015. This title was on our Mock Caldecott list several years ago and on the Land of Enchantment Award list last school year. You can read more about it here.
