It was a bit of a crazy mixed up week at my school last week.
Each year our school has a day of service, our Serve-a-thon. All of our students (K-12) participate in some form of community service. Our kinder classes along with the fifth graders filled shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. I worked with this project which took place in the library. The fifth grade teacher read Miracle in a Shoebox to kick off the day. The students filled 79 boxes.
Because Serve-a-thon fell on elementary library day this year, I worked to re-schedule my classes. My aide has other responsibilities at the school and I have to work with the secondary schedule so I wasn’t able to make up all of the classes this week.
With the second grade we started Digital Citizenship. I use the K-2 curriculum from Common Sense Media. The first lesson focused on Going Places Safely – both in person and online. My third graders finished up their scavenger hunt from last time. Fourth grade had just finished the Book Parts unit so we played Shape Up as a review after reading The Thanksgiving Story The fifth graders had two sessions to work on their Animoto projects. Three groups finished up and the other five groups are getting very close to finished. I’m hoping to wrap this up in just one more session.
Friday afternoon I didn’t have anything scheduled but ended up with two classes. One was tenth grade world history – the students needed just a little more time to finish their research (and 1/3 of the class was gone to the state volleyball tournament). The other class – I ended up subbing for a faculty member who went home with the flu. I also had a bunch of kiddos who needed to finish tests before the break.
No school for us next week – we have the whole week off for Thanksgiving. So there will be no Week by Week post next Monday.
