Tips from Library Lady
Library Lovers Month in the School Library
February gives us a built-in opportunity to celebrate what we already believe—libraries matter. Library Lovers’ Month is the perfect time to build excitement, increase visibility, and remind your school community why your space is special.
Here are simple, doable ideas you can implement at any grade level.
💛 1. Blind Date with a Book (All Grades)
Wrap books in paper and write 3–5 intriguing clues on the outside:
- “Found family”
- “Big plot twist”
- “True story that reads like fiction”
- “Laugh-out-loud funny”
Elementary: Use simple clues and emojis.
Middle School: Add tropes (secret identity, enemies-to-friends).
High School: Try vibe-based clues (“dark academia,” “small-town mystery”).
Add a quick “Rate Your Date” half-sheet for students to complete and return.
📚 2. Why We Love Our Library Wall
Create a bulletin board where students and staff can complete:
- “I love our library because…”
- “My favorite book memory is…”
- “The library helped me when…”
High school twist: Use a QR code to collect responses digitally and share them during morning announcements.
🎉 3. Library Lovers’ Spirit Week
Keep it simple:
- Monday: Cozy Reading Day
- Tuesday: Genre Dress-Up Day
- Wednesday: Bookmark Making
- Thursday: Read with a Friend
- Friday: Staff Picks Spotlight
Feature one teacher each day with a favorite book and a short “Why I Love This Book” card.
🏆 4. Library Love Challenge
Create a flexible participation challenge:
- Check out a new genre
- Recommend a book
- Write a shelf talker
- Try nonfiction
- Attend a library activity
Keep it achievable—especially for older students.
🎤 5. Book Shout-Outs
Invite teachers, students, or administrators to record a 30-second book recommendation or submit a mini review. Share them:
- On announcements
- On social media
- On a hallway display
When the whole campus talks about books, your library becomes the school’s heartbeat.
❤️ 6. Fall Back in Love with Reading (Middle & High School)
Host a short advisory session about:
- Finding the right book for your mood
- Giving yourself permission to quit a book
- Using audiobooks strategically
- Escaping a reading slump
Many older students don’t dislike reading—they just haven’t found the right fit yet.
🎨 7. Elementary Engagement Boosters
- Stuffed Animal Library Sleepover
- Mystery Reader Day
- Book Character Parade
- Library Scavenger Hunt
Take photos (with permission) and share them in your school newsletter to increase visibility.
📈 Don’t Forget the Advocacy Angle
Library Lovers’ Month is also a strategic opportunity.
Consider:
- Sharing circulation highlights with the administration
- Posting before-and-after display photos
- Highlighting collaborative lessons
- Sending a short “Library Impact Snapshot” to your principal
Celebration and advocacy can go hand in hand.
Libraries don’t just house books—they build readers, thinkers, and community. This month is your chance to shine a light on the incredible work you do every single day.
