Celebrate National Book Month in October!

October is National Book Month, a perfect time to spark excitement about reading and highlight the joy books bring to our school communities. Whether you want to plan something big or just sprinkle in small celebrations, here are 10 creative ways librarians can bring books front and center this month:

📚 10 Ways to Celebrate National Book Month

  1. Themed Book Displays – Try “Books That Became Movies” or “Hidden Gems You Might Have Missed,” and add QR codes to book trailers or author interviews.
  2. Book Recommendation Wall – Invite students and staff to post their favorites with quick notes: “I loved this because…”
  3. Daily Book Spotlight – Share a featured title each day on announcements or social media, with short “book commercials” from students or staff.
  4. Character Dress-Up Day – Encourage students to come as their favorite book characters, then host a “Guess the Character” contest.
  5. Reading Challenge or Read-a-Thon – Track minutes read in October and celebrate participation with small prizes or recognition.
  6. Book Tasting Event – Set up genre “tasting tables” where students sample new reads and record their favorites on a menu card.
  7. Author Connections – Host a virtual author talk or encourage students to write letters to their favorite authors.
  8. Family Reading Bingo – Send home a bingo card with fun activities like “read a poem aloud” or “share your favorite childhood book.”
  9. Library Scavenger Hunt – Create clues leading students to new titles and underused sections like biographies or poetry.
  10. Blind Date with a Book – Wrap books in paper with teaser words only, and let students check them out without knowing the title.

🌟 Final Note

You don’t need to do all ten—just choose two or three that fit your school community. Even small celebrations remind students (and staff!) that books are worth celebrating all year long.

I’d love to see what you do. Post a comment with how you are celebrating this month.
