My Review

Lucy Song has a great way of explaining just what STEAM is (the combining of Art with STEM) in her introduction. I think if kids read the introduction they will be pulled into the activities in the book whether they consider themselves an “Art kid” or a “STEM kid.” I really like the STEAM designation much better.

In the first part of the book, Song focuses on some background information: What is art? Who is an artist? What do I need to know? and How to use this book. There is some really great background information in these chapters. I know some kids don’t like to read all the background in an arts & craft book but there is so much good information here, adults should encourage them to do so.

Part two is probably the part that will interest kids the most. It contains 20 art projects for them to create – so there is sure to be something that appeals to most children. I love that the projects have varying difficulty levels – which are designated in each project. I also like that Strong includes a variety of medium and techniques in the projects. She gives detailed instructions as well as a fun fact and other things to try for each project. Because Strong is trying to mesh Art with STEM, she tells the readers a STEAM connection for each project.

The book closes with a glossary of terms, a couple of templates, and a list of resources.

Awesome Art Activities for Kids is a great book for a child who is interested in Art or STEM.I received Awesome Art Activities for Kids through the Amazon Vine program. This is my honest review
