Interview with Nathalie P Suarez Moscoso

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

I never actually set out with the intention of becoming an author. It started with an experience I wanted to share. The idea first came to me around 2020, but between then and 2025, I was fully immersed in my medical training and simply didn’t have the time to sit down and bring it to life. Earlier this year, I finally decided it was time to materialize that idea and turn it into a book.

When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

Primarily, I’m a physician and a mom, and I explore writing during my spare time. I love spending quality time with my family, discovering new restaurants, and enjoying Zumba. I’m actually a Zumba instructor, although I’m not currently teaching, I just love taking classes for fun.

What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?

I enjoy books across multiple genres, but recently I’ve been especially drawn to contemporary adult fiction and drama, like the works of Colleen Hoover. Stories that explore personal growth, resilience, and complex relationships resonate deeply with me.

What is your vacation destination? Why?

My favorite vacation spot is the beach. I love spending time with my family there, relaxing by the water and enjoying laid-back, peaceful moments together. I also love visiting New York, the energy of the city makes it one of my favorite places to explore.

Who did you have in mind as you wrote the book?

When I was writing the book, I had my now seven-year-old in mind. The idea came to me when he was just two and starting daycare, a time when he was beginning to experience feelings of separation. I wanted a story that could help him understand those emotions and connect them to the meaning of my work as a physician. Now, with a one-year-old going through the same phase, the message feels even more meaningful.

As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

I have many favorite children’s books, but one of my top favorites is I Am Human by Susan Verde. My child and I love the illustrations and the poetic, thoughtful message. It’s beautifully written and always resonates with us.

What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?

Today, with so many tools and platforms available, becoming an author largely starts with deciding to share your message. If you have an idea you believe is worth communicating and you can put it into words, you’ve already taken the first step as writing is really about communication.
